Shoe Features and Biomechanical Effects
The basic principle of the Western Shoe is to position the toe set back from the natural hoof capsule, using the widest point of the foot as a biomechanical guideline for establishing the approximate center of the distal interphalangeal joint. This configuration helps shorten the lever arm at the toe and facilitates a more efficient break-over.
The 3° wedge elevation provides controlled palmar support and helps elevate the podotrochlear apparatus, reducing excessive tension within the structures associated with the deep digital flexor tendon and navicular region. The wedge can also be beneficial in horses presenting with a negative palmar angle, helping restore a more favorable hoof-pastern and distal phalanx orientation.
The toe rocker creates an early and progressive point of break-over, reducing the amount of leverage required for the limb to leave the ground. This can help decrease the mechanical demand placed on the deep digital flexor tendon and associated distal structures.
The multidirectional side bevels reduce medial and lateral leverages during break-over. By allowing the hoof to roll more freely in multiple directions, the shoe minimizes excessive rotational forces and facilitates a smoother transition through the final phase of stance.
A subtle rocker at the beveled heels helps soften the initial contact with the ground and allows a more progressive heel landing. This geometry can help reduce impact and abrupt loading of the palmar structures while maintaining adequate support beneath the heel region.
The combination of set-back toe, 3° wedge, toe rocker, side bevels and beveled heel rocker creates a shoe designed to optimize hoof mechanics throughout the entire stance phase rather than focusing exclusively on break-over.
Therapeutic and Biomechanical Effects
The primary biomechanical objective of the Western Wedge Rocker is to facilitate break-over in multiple directions while reducing excessive leverage throughout the hoof and distal limb.
By shortening the effective toe lever and providing multidirectional rolling, the shoe can help reduce tension and mechanical demand on the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) and decrease stress transmitted to the podotrochlear apparatus and navicular region.
The beveled heel and controlled heel rocker can also promote a softer, more progressive landing, potentially reducing abrupt impact forces through the heel structures.
The 3° wedge provides additional palmar support and can be particularly useful when a controlled increase in the palmar angle is desired, including cases associated with a negative palmar angle.

- Navicular syndrome and podotrochlear apparatus disorders;
- Chronic heel pain;
- Negative palmar angle;
- Horses requiring reduced break-over and decreased distal limb leverage;
- Laminitis/founder cases, when the 3° wedge and rocker geometry are appropriate for the individual hoof and veterinary/farrier treatment plan.
