The basic principle of the Western Shoe is set back at the toe with the widest point of the foot used as a guideline for the center of the joint.

Biomechanical Characteristics and Effects:

The Egg Bar Western offers a larger support area, providing better load distribution and protection to the heels. Designed with front, lateral, and medial rolling to promote rolling in all directions. The inner rim helps to sink the toe area and the egg bar avoid the heels sinking.

The 3° Wedge Egg Bar Shoe combines the increased caudal support of an Egg Bar Shoe with a 3° elevation of the heel region. This configuration modifies the hoof-patern alignment and redistributes loading forces through the hoof, while providing a broad and stable posterior support platform.

The 3° wedge is designed to provide a controlled elevation of the heel, which may be beneficial when a moderate change in hoof mechanics is desired as part of a therapeutic shoeing protocol.

Therapeutic Effects:

  • Increased caudal support — Provides additional support to the heel region and caudal hoof structures.
  • Load redistribution — Distributes ground reaction forces over a larger surface area, helping reduce concentrated loading within the hoof.
  • Enhanced hoof stability — The continuous bar creates a more stable platform during the stance phase.
  • It may reduce the functional demand on the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT)
  •    3° wedge  — Raises the heel region to modify the hoof's mechanical orientation and loading pattern.

Indications:

  • Certain flexor tendon or distal limb conditions where controlled heel elevation is appropriate
  • Caudal heel pain and related hoof disorders
  • Hoof capsule instability
